Résumé
Nick Monohan, un officier de police de Chicago, se fait offrir le rôle de chef de police dans une banlieue exclusive et clôturée nommée The Gates (littéralement « les portes »). Mais ce qui semblait un lieu de résidence paradisiaque pour la famille Monohan tourne rapidement au cauchemar, car une grande partie des habitants de la ville est constituée de créatures surnaturelles de toutes sortes. Nick tentera donc de faire régner l’ordre dans la communauté, tout en protégeant sa famille des vampires, loups-garous, sorcières et succubes qui l’entourent.

The Monohan family move into their new home in The Gates, an exclusive community of perfectly manicured lawns and friendly neighbors. But things grow complicated when Nick Monohan, the new Chief of Police, has to investigate those neighbors in a missing persons case during his first day on the job. Claire and Dylan Radcliff fight to hide not only their involvement in Nick's case, but their rather unusual family secret. Meanwhile, Charlie Monohan tries to adjust to his new school, finding a friend in the beautiful but unavailable Andie Bates. Just when his family is finally settling in, Nick's world is rocked by a late-night caller with some terrible news.

Nick investigates the death of the last Chief of Police, disturbed by what he's starting to discover about The Gates. Claire Radcliff deals with the repercussions from her recent transgression, fighting to put the past behind her. At school, Andie struggles to sort out her blossoming feelings for Charlie. And Brett works hard to keep dating Andie while fighting off Lukas' tempting offer to "come running" .

Brett is enraged that Andie and Charlie are back together but his extreme actions to remedy this will have far-reaching effects.
