Beschrijving
Het pad van Aster, een overheidsagent, en Halan, een stoïcijnse ex-militair, kruist elkaar wanneer ze samen vast komen te zitten in een van de vele Beacons in de ruimte die dienen als vuurtoren voor intergalactische reizigers. Elke Beacon wordt gerund door één hoogopgeleid mens en een gespecialiseerde kunstmatige intelligentie. Aster vindt op mysterieuze wijze haar weg naar de eenzame Beacon-keeper Halan, en er ontvouwt zich een gespannen wilsstrijd. Halan begint zich af te vragen of Aster vriend of vijand is, omdat haar vermogen om haar agenda en motieven te verbergen haar tot een geduchte tegenstander zou kunnen maken.
