Beschrijving
Seishu Handa is een jonge, behoorlijk succesvolle kalligraaf. Tijdens een tentoonstelling waarin hij de eerste plaats inneemt, probeert de curator van de tentoonstelling hem te motiveren om een iets persoonlijkere stijl te ontwikkelen. Hij vat het goedbedoelde advies echter ten onrechte op als persoonlijke kritiek, waarop hij de curator een klap in het gezicht geeft. In onderling overleg stuurde zijn vader hem vervolgens naar het eiland Gotou (prefectuur Nagasaki) om inspiratie op te doen en zijn schrijfvaardigheid een nieuwe impuls te geven. Zijn plan voor een rustig, geconcentreerd werkverblijf wordt echter gedwarsboomd zodra hij aankomt, omdat de lokale bevolking niet bang is om de nieuwkomer in hun gemeenschap te integreren. Vooral voor het zevenjarige buurmeisje Naru is hij de nieuwe attractie van het eiland, omdat ze altijd op zoek is naar spelletjes, plezier, avonturen en nieuwe ervaringen.

Handa has returned to Tokyo, to show his new "STAR" calligraphy to the gallery director he had punched and ask for forgiveness. However, Handa doesn't feel quite right about the work, and ends up smearing it before the director can. Could some inspiration from his time at the island help him create an even better work before the deadline?
