줄거리

셰릴 스트레이드의 베스트 셀러를 원작으로 하는 《작고 아름다운 것들》은 삶이 무너지고 있지만 동시에 존경받는 고민 상담가인 클레어(캐스린 한)라는 여성에 관한 이야기이다. 우리가 처음 보는 클레어의 모습은 남편 대니와의 결혼 생활에 지쳐 있으며, 딸 레이와는 대화가 단절되었으며, 한때 잘나가던 작가로서의 삶은 존재하지 않는 상황이다. 이런 클레어에게 옛 작가 친구는 고민 상담가로서의 역할을 맡아 달라고 제안하지만, 클레어는 자기와 어울리지 않는 일이라고 생각한다. 마지못해 일을 받아들인 클레어는 그 일에 자신이 딱 맞는다는 걸 깨닫는다. 클레어는 사연자 때문에 어머니의 죽음, 형제와의 절연, 장례식장 뒤편에서의 끔찍한 섹스를 비롯한 결정적 순간을 회상해야 하지만, 삶의 아름다움, 고충과 유머를 통해 우리의 삶이란 구제 불능이 아니며, 우리의 이야기가 우리를 구하고 집으로 돌려보낼 수도 있다는 것을 보여준다.
