Overview

Kuumana kesäkuun 4. päivänä losangelesilaisen hotelli Ambassadorin asukkaat ja henkilökunta valmistautuvat kukin tavallaan illan kohokohtaan, juhlasalissa tapahtuvaan senaattorin presidentinvaalipuheeseen, jonka päätteeksi hänet tunnetusti ampui 24-vuotias palestiinalainen Sirhan Sirhan. Vaa'ankielen asemassa olevan Kalifornian esivaalituloksia jännitetään: vapaamielisen osavaltion äänet ratkaisisivat rakastetun demokraattiehdokkaan mahdollisuudet vaaleissa Nixonia vastaan. Veli John F. Kennedyn murhasta on vihdoin toivuttu, ja ilma on täynnä toivoa uudesta tasa-arvoisemmasta, ihmisläheisemmästä presidenttikaudesta sekä vihatun Vietnamin sodan lopettamisesta.
