Overview
Karl og David er på vej på ferie med deres far i et privat fly, da de kommer ind i et voldsomt uvejr, der får flyet til at styrte ned ved Dinotopias kyst. I denne eventyrlige verden, har mennesker og dinosaurer levet side om side i årevis, og de to forskellige racer har skabt en hverdag i gensidig harmoni. De to brødre er målløse over disse menneskekærlige skabninger, men bliver næsten lige så betaget af den smukke Marion, som byder dem velkommen til øen og viser dem rundt. Harmonien er ikke til at finde over hele øen. På den anden side af hovedstaden Waterfall City, lever en kødædende dinosaur race, som konstant er en trussel mod øens balance. Næsten lige så farlig er en gruppe fredløse mennesker, heriblandt Cyrus Crabb en tidligere pirat, der ikke ønsker at indordne sig under øens regler og allerhelst vil flygte fra øen. Men øen har et langt større problem, nemlig energiforsyningen.

Karl and David try to adapt to life in Dinotopia, and step one is to attend Dinotopia's grade school, where Marion teaches them the rules of their society as well as the dinosaur language. However, Karl plans to escape from the island.

David is assigned to Pterodon flight school, while Karl is sent to take care of the dinosaur hatchery, where his future dinosaur life companion is about to hatch. David faces difficulties during training. Karl tries to escape once again.

The main Sunstone is about to fail, which means the end of Dinotopia. As carnivores prepare to attack the capital, Karl, David and Cyrus travel to the forbidden ruins of an ancient dinosaur temple in a desperate attempt to save everyone.
