Résumé
Trois marginaux, Mark, Memo et Becky découvernt un monde fantastique appelé la Tour Noire où le Gryphon, un monstre dévastateur, asservit sans pitié toutes les créatures vivantes. Mark est le seul à pouvoir le vaincre. Mais il n'est pas un héros et ne veut pas le devenir. Il a assez à faire avec l'école, ses crises de colère et son premier amour. Il n'est pas question pour lui de combattre des monstres. Mais lorsque Thomas, le frère de Mark, disparaît, les amis doivent se lancer dans ce monde fantastique et affronter le danger.

Against his mother's will Mark tries to find a way back to the world of the Black Tower in order to save Memo. Meanwhile, Becky tries to find out if the contents of the chronicle really exist or if Mark is suffering from hallucinations.

Mark and Memo hatch out a plan to free Thomas. Becky doesn't suspect a thing. She is convinced that Mark is imagining everything. So is his mother, who wants him committed to a psychiatric ward. Will Mark manage to escape?
