Overview
Radnja je smještena u budućnost u kojoj je svijest digitalizirana i pohranjena u kortikalnu knjižnicu koja je ugrađena u kičmu, čime ljudi imaju mogućnost da im se nakon smrti očuva svijest i ugradi u novo tijelo. Priča prati poslanika Takeshija Kovacsa koji je iz zatvora u vanjskome svijetu, po nalogu Laurensa Bancrofta, utjecajnog aristokrata, ugrađen u tijelo osramoćena policajca. Bancroft je ubijen, a njegova posljednja pohrana u kortikalnu knjižnicu bila je nekoliko sati prije njegove smrti, stoga se on ne sjeća tko ga je, i zašto, ubio. Policija je zaključila da se radi o samoubojstvu, ali Bancroft je uvjeren da je ubijen i traži od Kovacsa da dozna istinu.
